OUR PLANS MULTIPLIED

In the beginning, JD adamantly only wanted two children. I thought that four would be perfect. Once we caught God's vision of putting orphans into families, our plan was multiplied by God. We are currently blessed with 12 children; five biological, six adopted and one more waiting in Ethiopia. Our first adoption was from the U.S., the next three were from Liberia, West Africa, and our last two were from Ethiopia. We are supporting our 12th child in Ethiopia after her adoption could not pass court.

Sometimes You Just Have to Have a Birthday

We have had some birthday issues from the very beginning of Selah's referral. When they sent me her referral photo, they told me that they were questioning the birthday that was on her orphanage paperwork. That paperwork stated that she would be six next month in May. Later, her finalized paperwork changed her birthday to October, five months later. Everyone still though that was a stretch and she seemed to be about a year younger.

Since Bella had her 3rd birthday in January, Selah has asked every few days when it's going to be her "happy birthday". Our answer has been, "soon". We recently had a bone scan done, which is supposed to be able to pin-point a close age range in spite of malnutrition, etc, and it came back that she has 2.5. Knowing that is too young, we requested that it be re-read and it came back at 2.5 - 3. After looking into what's involved in legally changing a birth date, we are sticking with the second October birthday. So, Selah will actually turn six this fall, but will start Kindergarten.

Since there was no way we could make her wait until October for a birthday, and she never got one when she turned 1,2,3, or 4, we had Selah's 5th birthday on the one night this week that Alei had off from work and that Aunt Deb could come celebrate.

She couldn't have been any more pleased when we sang to her -

We then had presents.

I snapped this picture of her posing for Alei. So much personality!

Now we are on track for October and we are quite sure she won't mind that her birthday rolls around much quicker this year.

  2. We have been talking lately about doing things the way that is best for us, not just because it is what everyone else does... This is a great example of that! Happy Birthday Selah, you have an awesome family!:)
